LOG HOMES vs. INSECTS: What to Look for

One of the first questions people ask about log homes is How Much Termite Damage Do They Get? Well, rest assured: log homes are no more susceptible to termites than a traditional framed house. In some ways, it would be easier to spot possible infestation: in a stick-framed house, you could have an problem for years without even knowing it. The termites would be hidden behind your sheetrock, happily gnawing away at structural members, and would attack your walls from the inside-out. With a log, they would most likely start on the outside and work their way in, leaving an obvious trail of sawdust or mud foraging tubes.

Termites thrive in a damp environment; they dehydrate when exposed to the air for too long. If your logs are kept dry, they won't be a tempting target for wood-boring insects. On the other hand, if you have a spot where a gutter is leaking onto the logs, or your door frame leaks, watch out! That damp spot is the point of entry for insects and wood rot. Also, keep your air conditioner from dripping near the foundation; this is another potential trouble source.

In new construction, there are some measures you can take to reduce the risk of termite damage. First of all, make sure your contractor does not bury any wooden construction debris under the topsoil. This is very common on job sites, and the decomposing wood creates a great environment for new termite colonies. Secondly, make sure they install a termite shield below the sill plate; this is a bent piece of metal that creates a barrier between the foundation and the wooden sill. Many townships require this by code.

Before you apply the stain, it would be wise to spray the logs with a borate treatment; when added to water, this powdered insecticide is designed to soak into the logs and protect them against insects and wood rot. After the borate treatment has dried (and before the rain washes it off), apply your stain which is toxic and will also protect your logs from insects. To be extra sure, there are additives you can add to the stain that contain insecticides.

Carpenter bees do not like to chew through treated, painted, or stained wood and will probably find more tasty surfaces to attack. Keep an eye on your porches and fascia boards; after a few years, when the stain no longer looks fresh, the bees may revisit your house and start making those perfectly round 1/2" holes. Luckily, they are easy to treat and once you spray and plug those holes, that particular bee should be taken care of.

Caulking between the log courses is another good way to seal out the insects. I've actually watched a fly drag a tiny leaf into a small split in our log ends. You just don't know what critter wants to live in your logs. Also, do not stack firewood against your house. Chances are very good the cured wood already has insects in it, and you don't want to transfer them to your pristine logs.

The most important thing to do is make an occasional investigation of your corners, eaves, window frames, foundation. Many infestations are easily dealt with if caught early enough. Don't assume your house will take care of itself; you, the owner, will be the first line of defense.

Eating Healthier Starting Today!

When I was a child, I spent a few years being terribly overweight. Thanks to the many hours I spent learning about how to make better food choices and several degrees later, I was able to come up with a fantastic way to eat for energy and good health.

It's not easy for me to stay trim. When you are overweight as a child, the fat cells have a tendency to plump up in no time.

Now, I eat to be trim and stay healthy. Plus, I like to feel energetic. And my grocery shopping trips are no longer overwhelming. There are so many processed foods that should be avoided...especially when it comes to our health!!

Yesterday, I had the fortunate experience to be able to meet and talk with clinical nutritionist, Beatriz Gallager, CNS. I wanted to hear what she had to say about food. So, I asked her to tell me what two foods I should avoid.

Her reply was just as I had hoped for. She told me to stay away from the artificial sweetener, aspartame. In fact, I don't use any artificial sweeteners. I would never feed them to children, either!

Secondly, she said to avoid any or all foods that have been microwaved. (In fact, I have my microwave hidden behind cabinet doors. If my spouse didn't purchase the microwave, it wouldn't be there at all...)

Then, Beatriz Gallagher, told me to try the following experiment: Put two potted plants on your counter. Water the first plant with tap water. Water the second plant with water that has been microwaved to the boiling point- and then cooled to room temperature. Water and take care of the plants, as needed. Yet, water each one the same way for 7 days. The first one should receive tap water. The second plant should receive the boiled/microwaved water.

One of the plants dies. Can you guess which one that would be?

The bottom line is that we have to feed our bodies good, nutritious foods. Unfortunately, in America many of the food choices we have been hoodwinked into believing are good for us...are not! And, in turn, they make us look and feel worse.

Kristen Colello is the author of an exceptional ebook entitled, No Strawberries, Please! This amazing ebook helps you understand food choices, how to select healthier foods, and takes the agony out of food shopping. You'll walk out of the grocery store knowing so much about the foods you have chosen. This ebook is simple, yet informative. Kristen struggled with her weight for years. And, now, after working with families for over ten years, her tips and strategies for better health and keeping trim are in this eye-opening ebook. Hovercraft Plans - You Can Build Your Own Hovercraft In A Weekend

Hovercrafts, also known as Air-Cushion Vehicles (ACV), are amphibious vehicles that move on a layer of pressurized air. Because of their unique design, they can cruise over virtually any surface: water, road, grass, snow and ice. As a result of their flexible nature, Hovercrafts have a great advantage in military applications, but they aren't just for the military. Lots of hobbyists love them too, especially since they are easy to build and with a good set of plans you can build a Hovercraft in a single weekend.

Some hobbyists prefer building and racing radio-controlled hovercrafts, which much like toy boats and helicopters, are controlled from a distance. But theres a lot more fun to be had than watching a small toy hovercraft fly around the local pond. You can actually build a hovercraft for yourself, and then get in it and take it for a drive. You can take your hovercraft for a nice leisurely cruise on the lake, or you can race your kids in the crafts you helped them build! If you get even more involved in hovercraft construction and operation, there are clubs to join as well so you can race fellow hobbyists and share building tips that will help you get more speed out of your craft.

And I have to say, Im a big klutz and even I managed to follow these plans without hurting myself or anyone else in the vicinity. On a weekend trip to my sisters, who happens to live near a lake, I made a short supply run to Lowes and then arrived on my sisters doorstep with plywood stacked up in the car. Her husband, myself and my brother put the Hovercraft together in less than a day and then spent the early part of the evening fighting over who got to use it next, so I think next time were going to try putting two more together so we can all race each other. Having done it once, Im pretty sure now I could just build the next one myself. The plans are easy to follow and well-illustrated for even a hardware newbie like myself to follow. And they really are just an incredible amount of fun. I'm actually looking forward to winter so I can try it out on the ice.

Want to build your own Hovercraft? Get a good set of Hovercraft Design Plans and get started on your weekend project. Convince a couple of friends to join you, and you can start racing them.

Should People Believe They are Like Batteries and Once They are Spent it's All Over?

Are humans just like batteries and when their lifetime of heartbeats has ended, they merely die? Should people believe that they are like Batteries and once they are spent, it is all over? Well, I guess such a notion basically throws all religion out of the window doesn't it. Still there are some biologists who still believe that the human heart only has "x" number of heartbeats. The reason I bring up this interesting, yet bothersome topic is that it was recently proposed to our online think tank by an atheist gentleman:

Why is it so hard for people to think that they might be just like a battery with a limited amount of life. And when its spent, its spent.
The issue seems to stem from the unknown and from fear and touches not only at the human heart but also at the human created religions; remember Maslow and the hierarchy of needs, self-preservation is at the top of the list. If someone promised someone something, so great as "eternal salvation" of course they would be willing to serve someone else's will in now in trade for that everlasting payment to be fulfilled at a later date.

Actually in the case of religion, which is a man-made thing, it is an excellent control mechanism for humans. Since humans presently do not comprehend what is really going on and they so desire not to die; religion answers many of the questions man has asked and philosophers have pondered. Heck a new religion might be that we are living in a Virtual Reality world, we created, thus making us all gods and when the game is over, we simply all wake up and carry on? No one can prove that is not the case, just like no one can prove there is a god or gods. Believing in something you cannot know, is somewhat problematic of course. Thus, getting back to the "battery concept" well we cannot know that either and their maybe a way to genetically modify a human so that he can live forever and continually renew from the energy that he collects, a self-sustaining battery if you will in the most hypothetical of definitions.

How to Improve Your Golf Swing

In order to become a golfer, you are going to need to master the building blocks of your swing. You need to understand how to hold the club so that you can give the ball a good wack. Once you have a good grip, how do you align yourself to the target so that the ball get close to the target you are aiming for? What should your posture look like? Just how much knee flex should you have, and exactly where is the ball located in your stance? Should you be looking at the sun or down at the ball when you take your swing?

For golfers that are naturally left handed, perfecting the golf swing can be kind of tricky. in the past there weren't very many clubs designed for left handed golfers, and most golf course designs put the left handed golfer at a disadvantage. As a result of this many left handed golfers learned how to play golf right handed. Today though technology has advanced to the point that some golf clubs have been specifically designed for left handed golfers.

It doesn't matter if you are left handed or right handed, because it all comes down to which side has the stronger, more natural feeling swing. To find out which side works best for you try swinging the club as if it were a baseball bat from side to side. The muscles that are used to swing a baseball bat are similar to the range of motion in a golf swing. Of course if you are still having trouble hitting a straight shot, you can always blame the equipment. A lot of golfers do.

The way that you place your hands on the club can affect your shot. Proper and placement on the club is going to be a very important part of your technique. Very few golfers that have played for any length of time pay a lot of attention to their hand placement. A golf grip is very hard to correct once you've gotten use to the ways your hand feel griping the club. To most golfer hand placement simply doesn't seem as important as the actually swing itself, this is why you see so many golfers with bad grips.
